Final Chance
"Observation"
Chapter One
(Note: This chapter will skip around a lot so please bear with me. This is only for people to understand who are the characters and how their personalities are. POV's will change as well so please don't get too disoriented as you read. I promise the chapter will get to the point.)
Tradition was something the people of Cosmo Canyon treasured greatly.
Most traditional ceremonies were incorporated into everyday life and
the people of Cosmo Canyon had the most ceremonies known to man. They
celebrated about everything: Childbirth, Death, Warrior Status,
Marriage, Coming of Age; you name it and it is more than likely
celebrated.
This month's celebration was one that happened only
when a child younger than sixteen decides that he or she is ready to
go on their own adventure before they are Of Age. In this case it was
the village's biggest problem child...er children.
Nemo, Sephiros,
and Terri.
Since most Cosmo Canyon residents were fighters, it is
only logical that they be trained from childhood. The children's
mother and guardian, Diana, wanted to make sure that her sons and
Terri knew how to protect themselves and use the powers bestowed on
them from The Planet. She also hoped that Nemo and Sephiros would
learn some discipline, although she knew not to wish for
miracles.
She loved her boys. They were bright, energetic little
boys who unfortunately liked to get into lots of trouble. As much as
she would hate getting gray hair, she knew by the time she was in her
prime that she'd be seeing little spots of gray popping all over
everywhere if they got any worse over the years. They could worry a
woman to death. Terri on the other hand; she loved the little girl,
even if she showed a lack of emotion. Terri was very quiet and she
never argued with the boys, even when Sephiros tried real hard to get
a reaction from her besides a blink, and she always tried to help
Diana around the house. The twelve-year-old cooked, cleaned, did
laundry, and was still able to spar with the boys during the
afternoon. Terri proved to be quite a challenge for them as she was
much faster and much stronger than both of them. Nemo thought that
the fact that Terri was like that was "cool". Sephiros on
the other hand, who didn't really like Terri all that much, was even
more upset by the fact that she was faster than him. He was very
proud of his speed.
Of course, other than that the children got
along quite fine. The boys were simply being boys and so Diana was
patient with them. Nemo seemed to take a liking to Terri, saying that
everyone needs a friend, even Terri. As she thought about the girl
Diana sighed.
Terri was an enigma. Diana felt that it had not been
too long ago when she and the boys had found the little girl, clothes
torn with scratches and bruises all over her body. She had been sick
with a strange fever and did not wake up for weeks. There had been
many times when Diana thought Terri was going to die. Then suddenly
she was up and about, walking around as if nothing had happened and
wondering where she was. It was then when Diana and the townspeople
began to see that something was quite "different" about
Terri.
She lacked all basic emotions and yet was curious about
everything. She was a powerful fighter but looked fragile. The two
orbs that rested on each side of her headband held some magical
power, although Diana could not tell what that was exactly. Her hair
was a dark blue and was unevenly cut at the ends which had Diana
slightly worried about the health of her hair but Terri showed no
signs of distress. The thing that most disturbed Diana about Terri
was her eyes. Terri had
haunting green eyes like her two sons but there was a strong
difference between them. While Nemo and Sephiros' eyes held a hint of
the fact that they were of The Planet, Terri's eyes seemed to be
nothing but Lifestream power. In fact, Terri's entire aura suggested
that she was totally born from the Lifestream itself. This was
something that totally baffled Diana as she did not know of any
creature that could survive the Lifestream totally intact much less
be a being of the Lifestream. Of course, The Planet had an odd way of
doing things and she was not one to be close-minded.
The three
children, were at the moment, sitting down and talking about the
trial ahead and how things would be. Terri had "no conclusive
data" to offer which left the two boys grasping at
straws.
"Maybe they make you walk through hot coal barefoot."
Nemo said with a skeptical look on his face "I would hate that
though. Man, doncha think that'd be real hot?" he asked
"Well,
duh Neron." Sephiros snapped, using Nemo's hated nickname he had
adopted for him "You said
hot coals didn'cha? They ain't gonna make us walk on hot coals. Get
real."
Nemo's eyes narrowed at his older 'brother' "Well,
Sephykens," Nemo
spat, knowing full well what saying that name meant for him "You
got a better idea?"
Sephiros, now quite furious, stood up,
green eyes blazing, and glared at his younger sibling "Don't
call me that!"
Even though he was a couple inches shorter
than Sephiros, Nemo stood up to the challenge, puffing up his little
chest and crossing his arms in a defiant manner "Then don't call
me Neron!" he spat back "Mom already told you not to call
me names!"
"Both of you are incorrect." Terri said
simply "They would not make us do anything foolish like walking
on hot coals or having a shouting match." she looked at the two
of them, her bright green eyes showing no emotion "They will
either give us a battle of wits, a battle of strength or both. Going
by the communities mannerisms, this is the only possible conclusion I
have been able to gather." the thirteen-year-old girl stood,
brushing off dust from her skirt and tucked some hair behind her ear.
"You two argue too much. It is counter-productive. I will go and
talk to Nemo's mother." and at that, the girl stalked
away.
Diana sighed as she watched the sight. The boys were slowly
growing up and yet still managed to act like they were still five and
six.
"You are the female parental unit? I am
Terriana Lapis Heiger. I am in need of your assistance."
"Oh,
Terri." Diana sighed "Will I ever be able to keep my
promise to you?" she asked to no one in particular.
"Sephiros!"
As requested, I have been observing Human
Behavior so that I may one day be able to understand how to be human
when I have gathered all of the data needed to do so. The main people
that I observe the most are my 'family members' as logically a child
would learn the most from the 'family environment'. Nemo and Sephiros
are my age, and thus I can gather much information on them.
Today
I decided that I would observe the emotions known as 'jealousy' and
'envy' as Nemo seemed to be displaying much of this. Both Nemo and
Sephiros had informed me at an earlier date that these emotions were
primarily exhibited within females although I have noticed that males
seem to show this emotion as well. Sephiros does this when Nemo is
around myself and Nemo shows this emotion when other girls their age
or older give attention to Sephiros moreso than him. I do not
understand why females flock to Sephiros instead of Nemo since I
cannot understand why someone would prefer one over the other. Humans
are very strange creatures.
Terri looks over towards the small
scene the teenage girls were showing as they surrounded Sephiros and
began talking to him. Nemo looked like a little angry thundercloud
with his hands shoved into his pockets, shoulders slumped and a scowl
on his face as he gave his brother a look.
"Why's he always
getting the attention?" he muttered, not for anyone to hear
although with Terri's keen hearing she picked up on it and blinked at
him.
"Why does it matter?" she asked innocently.
If
possible, the thundercloud struck lighting "It doesn't."
Nemo snapped, annoyed that Terri heard him.
This is illogical.
Terri thought I do not understand humans in the least. We were
walking to the market to purchase items, the females gather around
Sephiros a block before we get there and Nemo is now snapping at even
me. Nemo seems upset at the lack of attention but yet constantly says
that he doesn't like being "pounced on like a piece of meat like
Sephiros" which contradicts each other. There is a falsehood
here and I cannot decipher it. Why does it matter that Sephiros
acquires more attention than Nemo?
Sephiros, who was ignoring
Terri and his younger brother, flipped a hand through his hair,
making the girls completely swoon over him while he flashed him his
best grin. "Sorry ladies," he began "just going to the
market today. It's mom's birthday and Terri needs supplies to bake a
cake." he winked at one girl in particular and she leaped at the
invitation.
"Why, Sephiros you naughty boy!" the said
girl scolded lightly, touching his arm "You should have told me
about your mother's birthday! If you need supplies..."
"I'll
be more than happy to get them for you!" another girl chirped in
"And you know I'm a good cook..."
"Ooooh! Sephiros,
please let me be the one who makes your mother's cake!"
"Sephiros!
Sephiros!"
As Terri watched the scene she was suddenly
grabbed by the arm and dragged off from the scene by a very irritated
Nemo who walked to the market.
"It's really sick how those
girls just hang all over him." Nemo muttered to himself "And
he just stands there and lets'm do it."
Once Terri was able
to retrieve her arm she walked into step beside him "Why does it
matter? If they like him..."
Nemo shook his head "Terri,
it's one thing to like a person because of the fact that they're a
good person. Those girls only like Sephiros because he looks good.
They don't know a thing about him."
"And yet you envy
the attention he receives?"
This got Nemo facing her, his
intense eyes boring into her emotionless ones "You can't
understand Terri." he said and then when she only blinked at him
sighed "It doesn't matter Terri." he gave her a lopsided
smile and put a hand on her shoulder "Sorry about that. Anyway,
the Trials are coming up in two days and Sephiros hasn't even tried
to train. At this rate we'll never be able to leave Cosmo Canyon and
mom and I will never be able to keep our promises to you."
"I
am not disappointed at this fact." Terri said as she followed
Nemo into the market and lifted a hand when the clerk smiled warmly
at them "I cannot long for something when I do not have the
emotions to do so. Therefore, I am not in a rush to acquire my
Orbs."
She was trying to do what humans usually do when
someone seems down and cheer them up. It didn't work.
With a
darkened expression, Nemo began to grab a bag of flour "I keep
my promises Terri." he said
"I apologize. I was not
trying to anger you."
"Making Diana a cake today?"
the clerk asked, trying to lighten up the mood. He smiled as he
looked at the two teenagers. He knew what it was like to go through
the Trials and how it made one feel so he sympathized with them. He
also knew that these kids were no ordinary kids. They would be
fine.
"Yes." Nemo said, his mind on something other than
the Trials "Mom's birthday is today and the three of us decided
that we'd make her a cake and cook dinner. We all pitched in a got
her something nice too...but we're not telling anyone until it's all
over." Nemo said and winked at the clerk, his mood suddenly
changing.
The clerk looked around "Three? You mean Sephiros?"
he asked
"Yes." Terri said "He is outside at the
moment doing what people call flirting."
This made the clerk
laugh and Nemo sigh. Terri was blunt and often clueless but the worse
thing about her was her usage of dialogue. Nemo had told her a
million times that simply getting to the point was much easier than
giving a somewhat long explanation.
"Flirting, Terri."
Nemo said "Just say 'Sephiros is out flirting'. Remember what we
talked about?"
"My apologies. Sephiros is out flirting
with what Nemo calls tramps."
"TERRI!"
For some
odd reason, Terri wanted to smile, instead she simply said "My
apologies. Was that incorrect again?"
Humans are odd. I
try to understand their emotions and find myself asking more
questions than gaining more answers. I know now that jealousy is
sometimes misunderstood for brotherly love. Nemo is upset not because
of the fact that the girls hang all over his older brother. Nemo is
upset because the girls do not like Sephiros because he is a good
person, but for his good looks. Obviously going by Nemo's perception
on how the world works, this is wrong and very narrow-minded. For
some odd reason I find myself agreeing to this conclusion, although
it is illogical. Females want the male that will be able to produce
attractive, strong, and intelligent offspring, and so for the girls
to like Sephiros for this reason is logical, but morally wrong. I
will have to evaluate this further as time progresses.
Besides his mother, even Sephiros
had to admit that Terri was by far the best cook in Cosmo Canyon. She
may not have emotions but unlike his earlier beliefs he knew Terri
had a soul. No one could cook that good and not have a soul.
The five-foot-two, blue haired-green eyed wonder could cook just
about anything and in any fashion. And not only that, this girl used
no box nor did she use any can. She made everything from scratch and
knew exactly how much of what to put on everything.
When Terri had
been found by Nemo and Diana, Sephiros did not trust Terri at all.
She was too calm, too unemotional for his liking. Kids weren't
supposed to be unemotional. As they got older and Terri became a part
of the household Sephiros found that he no longer hated Terri, but
was actually quite attracted to her. Of course he didn't show this,
instead he flirted with other girls, gaining attention and going on
dates well before his age. This usually infuriated his little brother
Nemo, who couldn't get a date to save his life, and Terri seemed
indifferent to it. She didn't seem angry, but she wasn't happy, sad,
frustrated or anything else that would resemble an emotional
reaction. Sometimes she seemed confused, since Nemo would get jealous
and Terri didn't really understand being jealous, but that was about
it. Sephiros didn't really know whether he should be insulted or just
to assume that's just how Terri was and get over it. He decided on
the latter eventually.
And Nemo. Bless his little heart, the boy
was about as adventurous with women as Terri was emotional. Nemo for
the life of him could simply not understand why Sephiros got all the
girls and he had none. Sephiros knew it was for two reasons. One, he
was shy. Horribly shy. Girls liked Nemo, sure, but he was so shy the
girls didn't want to approach him. Why do that when they have a guy
that's more than willing to flirt around? The second reason was
because of Terri. Nemo didn't know it, but he spent lots of time with
Terri; more so than Sephiros really liked. They trained together,
went out to get supplies together, built things together, heck, Nemo
even cooked with Terri on occasions. It didn't really help that
Nemo's little orb thing, Materia, whatever the heck it's called,
glowed all happy-like whenever Terri so much as came around it.
Sephiros hated the little orb thing and the little orb thing hated
Sephiros. It was just a mean thing of Materia with a personality. And
sometimes it spits out lighting.
So Terri was cooking a huge
dinner in celebration of Diana's birthday, complete with a big cake,
homemade ice cream, and even sprinkles. Sprinkles were good. Sephiros
liked sprinkles. Chicken, soups, potatoes, rice, fish, everything was
either in a pot, pan or cooling off while Terri put in even more food
to be cooked. Terri even went so far as to rap Sephiros' knuckles
with the large wooden spoon, and since Terri wasn't a very light
hitter, it hurt. Upset,
Sephiros sulked away and decided to find another person to talk
to.
Sephiros found himself walking outside towards the back yard
where he saw his mother hanging up clothes. Even though technology
was starting to become the "in" thing, Sephiros was still
grateful that his mother still dried clothes the old fashioned way,
as he really liked the way his clothes smelled of the autumn breeze
and how they were always comfortable and not too itchy from the
"dryers". Finding himself smiling, he walked over towards
his mother. As he neared her he began to realize that she looked deep
in thought about something. The smile fading to a look of concern,
Sephiros leans over and puts a hand on Diana's shoulder.
"Okaasan?"
he began "What's wrong? You look sad."
Diana almost
jumped, turning and looking at Sephiros before putting on a smile.
"What? Oh it's nothing. I was just thinking that's all.
Something up Sephiros?" she asked
He was convinced, but said
nothing "I know you wanted us to go through the Trials, so I'm
wondering where we're supposed to go once we're done."
There
was silence for a long moment, Sephiros trying to figure out what was
on his mother's mind and Diana trying to figure out how she was going
to explain anything to anyone about her reason for...
"Mom?"
Sephiros asked, "You sure you okay?"
There was a nod,
and Diana sighed "Yes, Sephiros I'm fine. I was just thinking
that's all. Well, I was thinking that you three could go to Midgar.
There's someone I want you to see."
"Uncle Reno?"
Sephiros asked. "I thought you didn't talk to him
anymore."
Diana turned to him like a streak of lighting, "How
do you know about my brother?" Diana asked, quite
startled.
"Uh...well...." Busted! And he knew it. He had
forgotten that he knew Reno only by spying on his mother and not
through actually meeting him. Lie? No, Mom's had that Mom Radar thing
that detected that stuff. Run? Nope. Despite the fact that Sephiros
was quite fast, Moms were always
faster. Especially when they had objects. Tell the truth? Argh, the
hated thing that boys tried not to do.
Take it like a
man! Sephiros could already hear
Nemo picking on him in his head. Determined not to be outdone, he
sucked it up.
"Well, it was like
this....onenightIwaswalkingtobedandIsawyoutalkingtothisdudenamedRenoandyoucalledhimyourbrothersoIputtwoandtwotogetherandstuff."
Okay. So most of it was true, and some things he left out. He was
walking to bed, sure, but he was really spying. He had known of
Reno's arrival and wanted to know what was going on. Not too many
red-heads with a nightstick came into town with an old Turks uniform
on.
Diana sighed "Sephiros, " she began and then stopped
herself "Yes. I want you to go and see Uncle Reno. He's called
me recently and he has a problem and I told him that I'd send you
three as soon as you passed the Trials. He said what he wants you to
do is right up your alley."
Now this was a bit confusing
"What?" was all the poor boy could muster out. What was his
mother getting at?
"You said you wanted to go adventuring
right?" Diana asked and when Sephiros nodded she continued "Well
I spoke to Reno and he said that he actually had an issue that would
need some help from you three. He said he would do it himself but he
says "Why should I have all the fun? Family should get a shot
too." or something of the like. Sometimes I tend to tune your
Uncle out."
This was it. The moment of
truth. This would determine who was better, Nemo or Sephiros. The one
on one battle of the century. Weapons were set, the battle ground was
out and ready to be conquered.
Nemo glared at Sephiros. Sephiros
glared at Nemo. Both boys were ready to go, waiting for the slightest
sound in which they would jump to battle. Both boys were prepared to
show their worth and prove their skill. After endless days and nights
of training they knew that this moment was the moment they had been
waiting for, there was nothing else but this.
"Are you
ready?" Terri asked, deciding to play referee "Remember, if
you pass out you lose. Hitting below the belt is automatic
disqualification. No other weapons can be used except what you have
in your hand. If you lose your weapon you must continue without it.
Ask for more materials if needed to assist you in battle. No stabbing
each other with the weapons. Do you understand the rules?"
Diana,
who had just come into the room, looked at the scene, sighed, and put
a hand to her temple, knowing that tonight she would end up with one
whopper of a headache.
The two boys nodded, grinning.
"This
fight is mine." Sephiros said, "I've been training hard for
this day. You're not going to beat me."
"Yeah right."
Nemo said, "I've trained just as hard, and just because you're
taller doesn't mean you have the advantage."
Sephiros nodded,
"All well and good, grasshopper, but we'll see who's the
student and who's the master."
"Bring it
on."
Terri walked up to the table "The battle is over
once all of the food has been consumed. The one who has consumed the
most food will be the winner. I will be the judge. Are you all
ready?" she asked
With the dining room brightly lit, one
could clearly see all of the contents that were on the table. Terri's
good cooking would not be eaten in vain and both boys had something
to prove. This battle would be a good one.
With the table covered
with nothing but food, this battle would be long. Both boys were
prepared to face the fact that they might not be able to eat all of
it, but by The Planet they'd try. Both boys nodded. It was time to
begin.
Terri lifted her hand and stepped back "Begin!"
she exclaimed
And the two went to town.
With inhuman speed the
two boys, fork and knife in each hand, began grabbing food and
putting it on their plates, devouring the contents as soon as it
touched. They scarfed entire portions of mashed potatoes, corn,
shumai, chicken, turkey, and still had room for curry.
Nemo had
went towards the steak and plopped a slice on his plate, using his
knife to slice a smaller piece, grabbing the smaller piece and eating
it while gulping down juice at the same time. This process usually
took about five seconds. He then went to the meatballs, devouring
them one at a time in break-neck speed. He wasn't going to stop, he
could not stop. He had to beat Sephiros or pass out trying.
Sephiros
found himself trying to keep up with Nemo. He had to admit that his
little brother was very determined, but he would not be defeated.
Drinking down some juice to get his food down he went towards the
sushi. This battle wasn't over, not until the fat lady sang.
An
hour later the boys were finishing off fourths as Terri continued to
bring in food for them. Soups, chicken, steak, vegetables, shrimp,
lobsters, baked dishes were all brought out and all eaten within
seconds. It was now down to two plates, a plate of nikuman and a
plate of sausages.
The nikuman were devoured within seconds,
however, the sausages were uneven, leaving one sausage left and two
forks on said sausage.
And so the boys have a battle of wills and
of hunger. Who will get the last sausage? Who will trimumph? There
was no more food left.
"Hey Neron? What's that on your face?"
Sephiros cried out, a look of pure shock on his food stained
face.
Nemo lifted his hands to his face, "What? What?!"
he demanded before he realized his mistake.
The sausage was
gone.
Sephiros was victorious.
"Baka." Sephiros said
over a mouthful of sausage "Kid, you almost had me too. You fell
for the oldest trick in the book!" he would have laughed,
but even Sephiros knew his limits. So he snickered instead.
"If
you're done." Diana came in, "You boys can clean up and get
ready for bed." she gave them the "Mom Death Glare",
"After you've washed the dishes."
In the end, only mom
wins.
"AWWWWWWWWW MOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!"
***
"She's
unstable."
"She's just a girl.
"That....thing
is not a girl! It is a demon and should be treated as such!"
"Terri
is not a demon! She is a normal girl! All she lacks are emotions, but
she is as real as you or I!"
"You are trying to
play God! Your daughter died a long time ago, can't you just accept
that?! You're working for those bastards Shinra without even a
thought to your people! Dr. Heiger, we have respected you for a long
time, but now you have become as twisted as Professor
Hojo!"
"Silence! You will never ever compare me
to that man! He wanted to use an alien being to create the perfect
solider, to use tainted resources to make something twisted and evil.
My soliders would never have been used for evil."
"Don't
you understand Doctor? Shinra is evil! By doing what you have,
you have done nothing but aided the Devil himself!"
".........."
"She
must die Doctor...we must..."
"NO! Terri is the only
creation that has ever succeeded! Don't you understand? I have not
created a demon, but an angel. She is made of the Life stream, the
very source of the Planet itself. She is beyond the power and
knowledge of that of the Cetra. With her we could create a new
race..."
"Without emotions? You've said so yourself that
she lacks emotions."
"There is a solution. She can have
emotions. It is risky and she could die, but she can have
emotions."
"And so what if these new creations you're
talking about end up dying in the process? So will this world of
yours become Survival of the Fittest?"
"..........."
"She
must die Doctor."
"No."
"She must! For the
sake of Human kind!"
"NOOOO!"
"Terri!"
Her
eyes snapped open and she looked at me. I don't think she realized
who I was at first, but then when you're in the dark that happens. My
heart skips a beat as I look at her. Man, she really is pretty. I
wonder why she still has nightmares, even though it's real obvious
that she has no real emotions.
As she begins to recgonize me she
frowns a bit, just a bit, to the point that I almost don't notice
it.
"Is there something wrong?" she asks me, trying to
sound worried. For someone who lacks emotions, she sure tries hard
not to hurt feelings.
"No." I answer, "I was just
worried, you were tossing and turning in your sleep again. I...heard
you."
She blinked at me, as she usually did when I come in to
see her, "I thought you hated me." she said finally.
For
a week straight I had been coming into her room, waking her from her
nightmares. Every night she would simply blink at me and say nothing.
Tonight her curiousity has gotten the best of her. I almost smile.
Almost.
"I did." I say and shift so that I'm sitting on
the bed and Terri's head is leaning against my shoulder. Her hair
tickles my neck and I almost leap up off the bed. I hate being
ticklish.
"You do not hate me then?" she asks, moving to
look up at me.
I shrug, "I still might." I say and flash
her a grin. "You might never know."
"Perhaps
not."
Well, that killed my mood. Flirting with her really
just doesn't work. How does Nemo do it? "Sorry." I say for
no real reason "If it makes you feel better, I don't hate you. I
actually think you're very pretty."
"You are trying to
do that thing called flirting." she said "Nemo does not
like it when you do that."
I grin at that. "Nemo doesn't
like it because he thinks I can do better. That and he's
jealous."
She blinked at me "That is what he said,
although he did not say he was jealous. How do you know this?"
"I
know my little brother." I say "I'm a year older than him,
so I know a little bit more. Nemo knows how I think, and I know how
he thinks. That's why we make such a good team."
I don't
think Terri understands this so she continues to look at me with her
blank expression "But you two fight." she said
I shrug
again "That's what brothers do. It just comes with it. I mean
yeah, Nemo gets on my nerves sometimes but he's still my
brother."
"And do you compete for the same
women?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You
seem interested with the other girls and yet you do not date them,
really date them. Obviously, Nemo is more of my friend than I am
yours, and you seem to resent that. You become upset whenever he
touches me in a certain way, though you try hard to hide it."
I
stare at her. I didn't think I was so obvious. I mean, yeah I stare
at her and I get a little mad whenever Nemo puts his arms around her
in a friendly way, but I know that Nemo just sees her as his
Chocobo-loving friend, not as anything else. She notices it too, and
she notices how I get around her. If that's the case, why hasn't she
ever said anything? What else does she know?
She closed her eyes
and turned over on her bed, facing her back towards me "I have
been observing you and Nemo's behaviors for quite some time. I have
done this so that when I acquire my Orbs I will be able to fully
understand the emotions I shall gain. Out of the two of you, I find
Nemo's behaviors more confusing, however, you are quite predictable.
Nemo's behaviors are more unpredictable because he does not yet
understand what he feels. You are very aware."
"Sorry."
Lame, I know. How am I supposed to respond to that? "I try not
to be an open-book kind of guy."
"But you are."
"You
gonna keep rubbing it in?"
She imitates my shrug, but does
not turn to face me "Why do you come in here?"
"I
can hear you when you have nightmares. I can't stand to see someone
in distress. Especially someone I care about."
"I thank
you for your concern, however, it is misguided. I cannot be in
distress as I cannot feel that emotion. If I 'toss and turn' as you
have put it, it is because my body reacts to the dreams I am having.
It is not of my own free will and I feel nothing afterwards."
"So
that means you feel something during?"
"I feel nothing
always."
"Then you feel something."
She turns to
me this time, almost confused "I do not understand."
Since
I'm satisfied with this outcome, I bend down and kiss her cheek
lightly "Of course not. But now you're stumped and I'm not. Good
night Terri. Pleasant dreams." I say and get up, walking out.
As
I walk towards my room, I don't notice Nemo until after the
fact.
